When the national capital is facing a strong financial crunch, the AAP-led Delhi government has come out with another unrealistic promise of increasing in minimum wages of the state workforce by 50 percent.
The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal made an announcement on Independence Day to increase the minimum wages in the city by 50 percent. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s proposal is to raise the minimum wage of an unskilled person from Rs 9,568 to Rs 14,052. Besides, wages for semi-skilled and skilled people to increase from
Rs 10,582 to Rs 15,471 and from Rs 11,622 to 17,033.
It’s not the first time when the AAP government has come up with a populist pormise to the people of Delhi. Earlier, the party promised the people in the manifesto that the party would provide jobs to the unemployed youth but failed to deliver the promise.
Another unrealistic promise of free wifi in the state was made to the people. However, the government failed to deliver it because of the expensive infrastructure. The promise of installing the 15 lakh CCTV cameras failed to take off as it required billions of the money.
In the first budget, the party set big allocations in all the departments but the CAG in its report had lambasted at the government for making unrealistic budget allocations as state exchequer has no more funds.
The source of revenue generation is not much in the state capital as the state is already facing the deficit. The new announcement would affect the state exchequer as a sudden shoot up in the minimum wages would put a burden on the state exchequer which is already suffering because of the Delhi government’s costly add budget.
The AAP government made so many announcements after taking the reins of Delhi but all were unrealistic promises made to the people. The installation of free Wifi and lakhs of CCTC cameras was not possible.
The Delhi government should first check their state expenditure before making such promises to woo the people. Already, the national capital has been witnessing financial crunch because of the expensive ad budget of the party for the self-glorification of Arvind Kejriwal. However, it would be an eye opener for the people if the AAL led
government fails to deliver the new promise. If they deliver then it would affect the national capital.
