To many in Pakistan, Qamar Javed Bajwa is an unknown soldier. Yet on Tuesday, has become arguably the country’s most powerful person when he’s sworn in as its next army chief. And the first Indian to bask in the news is Quamar Javed BaJwa’s cousin and former Punjab Pradesh congress committee president Partap Singh Bajwa, extending congratulations for the same. The duo has had old family alliances, having a same surname is not coincidence but in fact they are closely related to each other.
Quamar Javed Balwa who was commissioned in the 16 Baloch Regiment in October 1980, is currently serving as the Inspector General of Training and Evaluation, Dawn said in a profile. He is from the infantry’s Baloch Regiment, which has had three officers become Pakistan army chief.
Quamar javed Bajwa has commanded the Pakistan Army’s largest force, the 10 Corps, which oversees the areas along the Line of Control. He is a veteran in handling affairs in the troubled Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and in the northern regions of the country. However, the indo-pak tension across the nation has failed to wedge a dispute in their relation as both the families still maintain a cordial relationship. Bajwa stated that he and his family members always stay at the residence of General Bajwa during their visit to Pakistan.
The caution already comes from the background questioning the integrity of Pratap Singh Bajwa in lieu of supporting and maintaining close ties the with gen Bajwa while bringing more threat to national security. It is noteworthy that Genral Bajwa was a close aid of General Mushraff and had played a key role during Kargill war.
Although, former Indian army chief general Bikram Singh, who was Bajwa’s superior during a UN posting in congo, in wake of the new appointee pre-warns India to be watching its space with caution, the well-wisher Bajwa still portrays his as extremely professional further stating his deep understanding of Punjab’s politics and takes keen interest. Now it will interesting to see how things unfolds from here considering Pakistan army’s role in pushing cross border terrorism is well known.
Interestingly this won’t be the lone contingency Gen Bjawa holds in India, alleged lady friend of Bajwa’s bête noire Captain Amarinder Singh, Aroora Alam and General Bajwa had close relation in past. Also, captain Amarinder had earlier hinted Bajwa’s Pakistani links.
Whether the Indian alliances of Gen Bajwa turns out to be in favor o0f India or not, only time will tell. It will interesting to see how things unfolds from here considering Pakistan army’s role in pushing cross border terrorism is well known.
