It has been barely six months since, comedian-turned-politician Gurpreet Singh aka Ghuggi has been in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has now been appointed at the new convener of Punjab on Sunday.
He has effectively replaced Sucha Singh Chhotepur, who had been expelled from the party on August 26th for allegedly entertaining a bribe caught on a sting operation set up by Punjab members of AAP. This progress in the party completely ends any chance of the estranged leader’s reinstatement.
AAP’s political affairs committee sat in New Delhi to clear Ghuggi’s name for the post as convener. Sanjay Singh, Punjab affairs in-charge, has claimed that Ghuggi will soon meet the organization heads in the state. Faced with a vertical splint on the ‘Punjab versus outsider’ debate, the party has asked 13 of its central observers appointed by Durgesh Pathak, the national organization-building in-charge, to go back.
Due to Ghuggi’s “young and poplular face” in Punjab is the primary reason for his election for the post according to a party source. They believe it would help the party’s prospects in the assembly polls.
Ghuggi had previously said that he was quite impressed by the work done by AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who brought “practical agenda and approach” to the political landscape to resolve the issues the people faced.
Ghuggi joined AAP early this year in February and was initially assigned to take care of the Majha region. His started as a Punjabi actor in Jalandhar’s Doordarshan, played a lead in a soap opera ‘Parchhaven’ and gradually became a household name after participating in ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’, a reality show on satellite TV. He has even done some comedy roles in Bollywood and Punjabi movies.
